The Bangles drummer Debbi Peterson turns 63

The Bangles drummer Debbi Peterson turns 63

One of the most popular female Rock drummers of all time, The Bangles drummer Debbi Peterson was born on August 22, 1961, in Los Angeles, California. Growing up in a musical family, Peterson was introduced to music at a young age. She began playing the drums when she was just 14 years old, inspired by her older sister, Vicki Peterson, who would later become The Bangles’ lead guitarist. The sisters shared a passion for music and soon began performing together.
In 1981, Debbi and Vicki formed The Bangs with Susanna Hoffs and Annette Zilinskas. The group later changed their name to The Bangles due to a legal issue. The band quickly gained attention in the Los Angeles music scene with their jangly guitars, tight harmonies, and catchy pop-rock tunes. Debbi’s drumming provided the backbone for the band’s sound, and her vocals added depth to their harmonies.
The Bangles released their debut album, All Over the Place, in 1984, which garnered critical acclaim and set the stage for their commercial breakthrough. Their second album, Different Light (1986), propelled them to stardom with hit singles like “Manic Monday,” “If She Knew What She Wants,” and “Walk Like an Egyptian.” The success of these songs made The Bangles one of the most popular bands of the 1980s, and Debbi’s role as the drummer and occasional lead vocalist was crucial to their rise.
Debbi Peterson’s voice took center stage on The Bangles’ hit ballad “Going Down to Liverpool,” as well as on other tracks such as “Be With You,” which she co-wrote and sang on the band’s third album, Everything (1988). The Bangles continued to enjoy success, but internal tensions and the pressures of fame led to their breakup in 1989.
After The Bangles disbanded, Debbi Peterson continued to pursue her passion for music. She formed a duo called Kindred Spirit with Siobhan Maher, releasing a self-titled album in 1995. Although the project was short-lived, it allowed Peterson to explore different musical styles and showcase her talents outside of The Bangles.
The Bangles reunited in 1998, and Peterson resumed her role as the band’s drummer and vocalist. The reunion brought new music and tours, including the release of their albums Doll Revolution (2003) and Sweetheart of the Sun (2011), both of which received praise from fans and critics alike. The band’s enduring popularity has kept them active in the music scene, with Debbi continuing to be an integral part of their sound and success.
Debbi Peterson married English sound engineer Steven Botting in 1989, and the couple has two children. Balancing her family life with her music career, Peterson has remained dedicated to her music while also cherishing her role as a wife and mother.
