Blur ruled as one of Britpop’s favorite bands during the 90’s. Formed in 1988, they first achieved stardom with the smash hit “Girls & Boys” in 1994 but wasn’t until 1995 that they had their first number one in the U.K, with “Country House” from the successful album “The Great Escape” that featured some of their best songs such as “Stereotypes”, “Charmless Man” and “The Universal.”
The song’s lyrics tell the story of a man who escapes the pressures and stresses of city life by retreating to a large country house. It reflects themes of suburban life, disillusionment, and the British class system, delivered with a mix of humor and irony. The music video for “Country House,” directed by Damien Hirst, is equally memorable, featuring surreal and comical imagery, including a caricature of the man living a life of excess in his country mansion.
“Country House” became Blur’s first number-one single on the UK Singles Chart, outselling Oasis’ “Roll with It” in what was dubbed “The Battle of Britpop” — a highly publicized chart rivalry between Blur and Oasis, two of the leading bands of the Britpop era.
