Seal tops the charts worldwide with his No.1 ballad “Kiss from a Rose” in 1995
After his successful debut in the world charts with his dance-techno collaborations with Adamski, Seal gets a No.1 song at the US Hot 100 in 1995 with a surprising ballad that became one of the most memorable songs of the 1990’s. “Kiss from a Rose” was written by Seal in 1987, and the singer-songwriter thought very little of the song, storing it for seven years, as he was heading then into a dance music oriented market that marked the late 1980’s and early 1990’s British music scene. After releasing his debut album “Seal” in 1991, during the recording sessions for the follow up “Seal II”, he presented the song to producer Trevor Horn, that sensed a hit ballad. The song was first released as a single on July 18, 1994, originally backed with “The Wind Cries Mary” (Jimi Hendrix cover) and “Blues in ‘E'”. But it was in 1995 when it was included on the blockbuster “Batman Forever” soundtrack that topped the charts worldwide, making it Seal’s most successful song and best-selling. It was released as a single from the movie soundtrack in the U.S on June 6, 1995, and re-released in the U.K on July 3, 1995, and by August 26 it was the No.1 song at the US Hot 100. “Kiss From a Rose” earned several awards, most notably, at the 1996 Grammy Awards, where it won awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. Looking back, Seal has stated recently that “To be honest, I was never really that proud of it, though I like what Trevor did with the recording. He turned that tape from my corner into another 8 million record sales and my name became a household name”.
