The Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson turns 58
The Scottish singer and frontwoman of the Alternative Rock band Garbage was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on August 26, 1966, and by the time she was a teenager she was invited to be part of the Scottish band “Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie” where she played the keyboards and did vocals. The band, which was a project formed by Big John Duncan, formerly the guitarist of Punk band Exploited (and later the roadie and guitar technician for Nirvana between 1992 and 1994). Her rebellious attitude and distinctive voice caught the attention of the record label who offered Manson a contract for a solo career. She recorded an album under the Angelfish name, that would lead her to famous producer Butch Vig (who produced Nirvana’s “Nevermind”). Butch, who was forming his own band, saw by chance Shirley’s music video under the name Angelfish broadcast only once on MTV’s 120 Minutes, and invited the singer for an audition with Garbage. Garbage skyrocketed Shirley Manson’s popularity worldwide during the 1990’s, and Garbage, one of the most memorable Alternative Rock bands of the era sold 12 millions of records worldwide, particularly with their first two albums “Garbage”, 1995 (co-wrote and co-produced by Shirley with the band) and “Version 2.0” from 1998, both included hits that marked the end of the decade such as “Only Happy When It Rains”, “Queer”, “I Think I’m Paranoid” and “Stupid Girl” among others. In 1999, Garbage made the theme song for the James Bond movie “The World Is Not Enough” (which can be a career curse for many artists popularity with very few exceptions as many who signed the James Bond’s theme songs throughout the years significantly lost a huge part of their popularity afterwards.) After the band was put on hiatus in 2008, Manson begun also an acting career, and was cast as a regular on the second and final season of “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles”.
Garbage returned in 2010 with a new album “Not Your Kind of People” and in 2016 with “Strange Little Birds”, their latest studio album release was in 2021 with “No Gods No Masters”
though without as much visibility as their first two albums back in the 1990’s, but still, one of the most acclaimed Alternative Rock bands that remain active from that era.
