German group Culture Beat tops the world charts in 1993 with their techno/euro-dance hit “Mr. Vain”

A smash hit and one of the most memorable songs of the 1990’s, “Mr. Vain” remains also one of the most successful euro-dance hits of all time

German group Culture Beat tops the world charts in 1993 with their techno/euro-dance hit “Mr. Vain”



The 1990’s were prodigal in turning to hits several different genres of music, including Metal, Grunge, Pop or Techno. One of the most popular genres and that produced a string of hit songs during the 1990’s was exactly Techno and Euro-dance, being among the most notable the 1993 Culture Beat “Mr. Vain”. First released on the German Dance group Culture Beat’s second studio album “Serenity” in 1993, “Mr. Vain”, vocally performed by Tania Evans and the rapper Supreme, was written by Steven Levis, Nosie Katzmann and Jay Supreme, and produced by Torsten Fenslau. It first broke in Germany that same year and spread quickly across Europe later in the Summer. It ends up topping the charts in 12 countries including Austria, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom in Europe and also Australia and Zimbabwe. In the U.S the song number 17 on the US Billboard Hot 100, which is considered to be one of the best positions for a Euro-dance hit in the U.S and earned a gold certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In the U.K it reached No.1 on August 28, 1993 where it remained for four weeks, also becoming the first UK No.1 song not to be available in a 7″ version.
