Composed by Rick Evans, and first released in 1968, the smash hit “In the Year 2525 (Exordium & Terminus)” gave Zager and Evans their only No.1 between 1969 and 1970. The song was a tremendous success not only in the U.S by reaching the top of the Hot 100 chart, but also worldwide, including in the U.K where it reached No.1 on August 30, 1969, and it’s now estimated that sales of the song have exceeded 10.000 copies including the single and inclusions on albums and compilations. The prophetic song, that remains contemporary through its lyrics, warned of the dangers of technology, portraying a future in which the human race was destroyed by its own technological and medical innovations. The last stanza of the song suggests mankind undergoes a continuing cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, and the overriding theme, of a world doomed by its passive acquiescence to and overdependence on its own overdone technologies, struck a resonant chord in millions of people around the world in the late 1960’s. Zager and Evans disbanded in 1971.
