Barry Gibb was born this day in 1946

One of music’s most prolific songwriters, the popular Bee Gees member is the last survivor of the band and celebrates 78 today

Barry Gibb was born this day in 1946

The popular Bee Gees member and last survivor of the band were born on this day on September 1st, 1946, in the Isle of Man, England. He moved with his family to Australia as a child, where he developed his interest in music. Together with his twin brothers, Robin and Maurice, they formed the Bee Gees. They returned to England during the 60’s becoming a worldwide sensation during the second half of the decade, not just because of their harmonized singing and distinctive voices, in particular, Barry’s, but also due to their talent as songwriters. Their third album “Bee Gees 1st” it’s an essential pop album with baroque and psychedelic influences. The song “New York Mining Disaster 1941” from 1967 became their first big hit, it was thought back then by some as being a new Beatles song due to the record being distributed to radio stations on a white label. “To Love Somebody,” “Massachusetts,” “I’ve Got a Message to You,” “Words” and “I Started a Joke” among others were the smash hits that followed and are part of the musical legacy of the 60’s. Their songs were and still are performed by a wide range of artists from many different musical backgrounds from Janis Joplin to Faith No More. During the 70’s they switched their musical direction when the Dance/Disco sound started to rule the charts and mainstream preferences, during that era their peak was in 1977 when they did most of the soundtrack to the iconic Disco movie “Saturday Night Fever”, that included what is to some people their signature song “Staying Alive.” Other hit songs of the period included “How Deep Is Your Love,” “Night Fever,” “You Should Be Dancing” and “Tragedy.” The 80’s sawed Barry and The Bee Gees switching again music directions and pursuing solo careers. Barry started the decade doing an album together with Barbra Streisand, the 1980 “Guilty” where he signs all songs as composer or co-composer and both duets together in two songs, “Guilty” and “What Kind of Fool,” but most memorable song from the album is “Woman in Love” that scored a number 1 worldwide hit for Streisand and features Barry’s distinctive vocals on chorus. In 1987 they released “You Win Again” that had significant success seeing as their comeback. Only in recent years, after Maurice and Robin passed away, the Bee Gees one of the most successful bands the world has seen, came to a definitive end. Gibb remains active and composes for other artists, but he hasn’t released an album of his own in some years though. We pick the promo clip from Bee Gees 1967 hit “New York Mining Disaster 1941”, one of their best songs and often forgotten in favor of the Disco era hits, for you to watch below.
