The Sex Pistol Steve Jones, born Stephen Phillip Jones in London, England on September 3rd, 1955, turns 69 today. By the time he was a teenager he already had fourteen criminal convictions he was the subject of a council care-order and spent a year in a remand center, which he said was more enjoyable than being at home. Jones interest in music was influenced by David Bowie, Roxy Music, Iggy & The Stooges, New York Dolls and 60’s band Small Faces. Together with Paul Cook, future Sex Pistols drummer, he founded The Strain, the band that the Pistols roots can be traced to, Jones, a self-taught guitarist learned to play the instrument while in the band. In 1975 together with John Lyndon (Johnny Rotten), Glen Matlock and Paul Cook he formed the Sex Pistols under the supervision of Malcolm Mclaren that brought the Punk concept to London after living in New York and managing the New York Dolls. Reportedly he recorded the first and only Sex Pistols studio album, the 1977 “Nevermind the Bollocks Here’s The Sex Pistols” with equipment he and other Pistols members stole from a David Bowie show at the Hammersmith Odeon (they disguised as crew members) and equipment he stole from a Bob Marley concert at the Hammersmith Apollo. Aside of the guitar parts, Jones also plays the bass in the album, except for “Anarchy In The U.K” that was recorded before Glen Matlock left the band. After the Sex Pistols broke up in 1979, Jones went on to form The Professionals with Paul Cook. They released 4 singles a the album “I Didn’t See It Coming” in 1981, after declining an offer to tour with The Clash, they broke up. Jones remained active as a musician and went on to form several other bands, at the same time he occasionally do some acting and currently has a successful radio show, “Jonesy’s Jukebox”, in Los Angeles where he lives. Over the years he had became more versatile as musician, in 2005 he collaborated on Lisa-Marie Presley’s debut album “Now What”, in 2013 and 2014 he had a regular role on the series “Californication”, among his many radio show guests he has interviewed are Dave Grohl, Lenny Kravitz, Julliette Lewis, Eddie Vedder, Susana Hoffs, Brian Wilson, Iggy Pop, Robert Plant and his former band mate John Lyndon.
