The Beatles iconic 1968 promo videos for ‘Hey Jude’ and ‘Revolution’
On September 4th, 1968, The Beatles recorded the now famous promotional videos for ‘Hey Jude’ and ‘Revolution’ at Twickenham Film Studios. By then the band had quit touring and doing live concerts, however the vocals are recorded live over the pre-recorded instrumental tracks to get round the current British Musicians Union ban on lip-sync performances. For ‘Hey Jude’, The Beatles were accompanied by a 36-piece orchestra and 300 fans and other assorted extras who join in singing the long refrain, both performances became iconic visual documents of the band. The group also performed the David Frost show’s theme tune, written by George Martin and titled “By George! It’s The David Frost Theme”. Afterwards Frost appeared on camera to introduce the Hey Jude performance. “Revolution” clip was broadcasted on BBC’s Top of the Pops on September 19th, 1968.
