With “Venus”, Bananarama finally “got it” in 1986

The British pop trio sensation Bananarama went to No.1 on the U.S singles chart on September 6th,1986 with “Venus”, a cover of the Dutch 60’s and 70’s Psychedelic band Shocking Blue. It became Bananarama’s signature song and was a worldwide hit in 1986. Regarded today as one of the 80’s pop music classics, the song was produced by the famed trio Stock, Aitken and Waterman that produced 80’s hits such as Dead or Alive’s “You Spin Me Roun (Like A Record)”, Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” and Kylie Minogue “I Should Be So Lucky” among many others. Though Bananarama still had a few hit songs after “Venus” (“I Heard a Rumour”, “Love in the First Degree”) they would never repeat the success of that song, especially in the U.S where they peaked to No.1 for the first and last time. On a side note, Shocking Blue were later also covered by Nirvana on their debut album “Bleach” in 1989 with the song “Love Buzz”.
