The actor Corbin Bernsen celebrates 70 today

The American actor, director, and producer Corbin Bernsen, best known for his roles in television dramas, particularly as the charming and morally ambiguous lawyer Arnie Becker on L.A. Law, was born on September 7, 1954, in North Hollywood, California. Born into a show business family, Bernsen is the son of prolific Hollywood producer Harry Bernsen and actress Jeanne Cooper, known for her long-running role on The Young and the Restless. Raised in the entertainment industry, Bernsen grew up surrounded by the arts. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theatre Arts from UCLA and went on to receive a Master of Fine Arts from the same university.
Bernsen’s early career consisted of small roles in television and film throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s. His first significant break came when he was cast in the popular soap opera Ryan’s Hope from 1983 to 1984.
Bernsen’s big break came in 1986 when he landed the role of Arnie Becker, a slick and womanizing divorce attorney, on NBC’s legal drama L.A. Law. The show was a critical and commercial success, running for eight seasons and earning Bernsen multiple nominations for his portrayal of Becker, including two Golden Globe nominations. His role on L.A. Law made him a household name and established him as one of the prominent TV actors of the 1980s and early 1990s.
Bernsen’s portrayal of Becker, a character who balanced charm and arrogance, became iconic, and his success on the show led to guest appearances on other television programs and opportunities in film.
In addition to his television success, Bernsen also pursued a career in film. He starred in the Major League trilogy (1989, 1994, 1998) as Roger Dorn, a vain and underperforming third baseman, which became one of his most recognized film roles.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Bernsen appeared in numerous television series, including guest spots on Psych, JAG, and The West Wing. He became known for playing complex, often morally ambiguous characters. One of his notable roles during this time was on Psych (2006-2014), where he played Henry Spencer, the tough and no-nonsense father of the lead character, Shawn Spencer. The role was well-received and introduced Bernsen to a new generation of fans.
In addition to acting, Bernsen expanded his career into directing and producing. He directed and starred in several independent films, including faith-based movies like Rust (2010) and 25 Hill (2011). These projects allowed him to explore themes of redemption and spirituality, reflecting his personal interest in more meaningful and thoughtful storytelling.
Bernsen has been married to British actress Amanda Pays since 1988. The couple has four sons: Oliver, Angus, Henry, and Finley. The family has often collaborated on various film projects, with Pays starring in some of Bernsen’s directorial ventures.
Bernsen has also spoken openly about his strong Christian faith, which has influenced his work in producing and directing films with spiritual themes. He is an advocate for independent filmmaking and has been active in creating content that speaks to his personal values and beliefs.
