In 1991 Nirvana kick-start the Alternative Rock revolution
Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” kick-started the Alternative Rock revolution on September 10th, 1991, the first single to be released from their upcoming album “Nevermind” and the first to be released through a major label, DGC, a part of Geffen Records. The single unexpectedly reached the top of the charts around the world, projecting the then unknown Seattle band to Rock Stardom, however the song’s success didn’t happen overnight, initially it was to their fanbase, mainly located on the northwest region of the United States and in some alternative rock music fan circles, that the song pleased the most, the game change was when MTV debuted the video for the song on their late night Alternative Rock program 120 Minutes, the low budget video became so popular that it began playing on heavy rotation on the channel. By then, other bands from Seattle had begun stepping into the mainstream, dominating the music charts during the early years of the 90’s. The Grunge movement as it was called, was reminiscent of the 70’s Punk, both in music and image and was culturally influential around the world during that period, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was and still is the song that symbolizes it to this day, John Lyndon, Sex Pistols lead singer, stated once that Americans only started to understand Punk after Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” success. Later in September of 1991, the album “Nevermind” was released and by 1992 it was one of the world’s best-selling albums along with established Rock acts such as Guns N’ Roses with “Use Your Illusion” and Metallica’s “Black Album.” Both “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and the album “Nevermind” are regarded as Rock masterpieces and highly influential. Nirvana came to an end in 1994 after lead singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain committed suicide at 27 years old.
