The British actor Andrew Lincoln celebrates 51 today
Best known for his role as Rick Grimes in the hit television series The Walking Dead, Andrew Lincoln was born Andrew James Clutterbuck on September 14, 1973, in London, England. Lincoln was born to an English father and a South African mother. His family moved to Hull when he was a young child and later to Bath, where he grew up. He attended the prestigious Beechen Cliff School, where he developed an early interest in acting. After playing the Artful Dodger in a school production of Oliver! he realized his passion for performance.
He went on to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, one of the most respected drama schools in the world. It was during his time at RADA that he adopted the stage name Andrew Lincoln.
Lincoln’s first major television role came in 1994 when he appeared in the popular British sitcom “Drop the Dead Donkey”. However, his breakthrough role came in 1996 when he starred in the BBC drama series “This Life”, where he played Egg, a young lawyer navigating life in London with his friends. This role earned him widespread recognition in the UK.
Following his success on This Life, Lincoln took on various roles in British television and film. He starred in shows like “Teachers” (2001-2003), where he played Simon Casey, a quirky and immature teacher, and appeared in films such as “Human Traffic” (1999) and the romantic comedy classic “Love Actually” (2003), where he portrayed the lovestruck Mark in one of the film’s most memorable storylines.
Lincoln achieved global stardom when he was cast as Rick Grimes in the American television series “The Walking Dead” in 2010. The show, based on a graphic novel series, became a cultural phenomenon, with Lincoln’s portrayal of the former sheriff leading a group of survivors through a zombie apocalypse becoming one of the most iconic characters in modern television.
For nearly a decade, Lincoln was the face of The Walking Dead, appearing in nine seasons of the series. His performance as Rick Grimes earned him critical acclaim, along with multiple Saturn Awards and a People’s Choice Award for Favorite TV Anti-Hero. Lincoln’s nuanced portrayal of Rick’s evolution—from a man determined to protect his family to a hardened leader facing impossible moral choices—helped anchor the show and made him a fan favorite.
Lincoln left The Walking Dead in 2018, he reprised his role as Rick Grimes in the spin-off series “The Ones Who Live” in 2024.
Andrew Lincoln married Gael Anderson in 2006, the daughter of Ian Anderson, the lead vocalist of the rock band Jethro Tull. The couple has two children, a son and a daughter and he prefers to maintain a low-key family life away from the limelight and splits his time between the UK and the US.
In interviews, Lincoln has spoken about the challenges of balancing his demanding career with family life, especially during the filming of The Walking Dead, which required him to be in Georgia, USA, for long periods.
After leaving The Walking Dead in 2018, Lincoln took a step back from acting to focus on his family. However, he continued to be involved in future projects, including the anticipated Walking Dead films and the “The Ones Who Live” series that continue Rick Grimes’ story. In addition to his work in film and television, Lincoln has performed in stage productions and expressed interest in returning to theater.
