Elvis Presley reaches No.1 on Hot 100 with “Don’t Be Cruel” in 1956
On September 15th, 1956, Elvis Presley started a five-week run at No.1 on the U.S Hot 100 with “Don’t Be Cruel” written by famed composer Otis Blackwell. One of Presley’s signature songs, it went on to become also one of his best-selling singles, by 1961 sales had exceeded 6 million. The single it’s one of Rock’s most historical records, the B-Side was another one of Presley’s big hits, “Hound Dog”, originally recorded by Big Mama Thornton, and reached No.2 on the charts, while “Don’t Be Cruel” was at No.1
