Michael Douglas was born Michael Kirk Douglas on September 25th, 1944, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, U.S, the son of Hollywood royalty actors Kirk Douglas and Diana Dill, Douglas built a solid career and name for himself without having to live in the shadow of his parent’s success. He first came to prominence during the 1970’s when he played Inspector Steve Keller together with actor Karl Malden on the worldwide successful TV Series “Streets Of San Francisco” that ran from 1972 to 1976. In 1976 he got his first Oscar as the producer of the highly acclaimed movie “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and in 1979 he stars with Jane Fonda on “The China Syndrome.” Douglas reached the peak of his popularity during the 1980’s where he played a string of important roles on blockbusters throughout the decade such as “Romancing the Stone” in 1984, “The Jewel of the Nile” and “A Chorus Line” in 1985, “Fatal Attraction” and “Wall Street” in 1987, that earned him the Best Actor Oscar in 1988, “Black Rain” in 1988 and “The War Of Roses” in 1989. Douglas popularity and relevance kept growing during the 1990’s where once again he played major roles on movies such as “Basic Instinct” in 1992, “Falling Down” in 1993, “Disclosure” in 1994, “The American President” in 1995, “The Game” in 1997 and “A Perfect Murder” in 1998. Since the 2000’s that Douglas has been more selective in the roles he takes, he reprise his 1987 role of “Wall Street” Gordon Gekko on the 2010 sequel “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” and in 2013 he played the flamboyant pianist Liberace in “Behind the Candelabra”, one of his best roles to date that was praised by the critics and awarded him with the Best Actor Golden Globe in 2014. Apart from his career in the film industry, Douglas has received notice for his humanitarian and political activism, as well as media attention for his marriage to Catherine Zeta-Jones. He is an advocate of nuclear disarmament, a supporter of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, a notable Democrat that has donated money to Barack Obama, Christopher Dodd, and Al Franken, he also has been a major supporter of gun control since John Lennon was murdered in 1980. In 2009, Douglas joined the project “Soldiers of Peace,” a movie against all wars and for global peace. Douglas lent his support for the campaign to release Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, the Iranian woman, who after having been convicted of committing adultery, was given a sentence of death by stoning. Michael Douglas is one of the best and most versatile actors of the last 50 years and throughout his career filled with awards and nominations, he has done some of the Cinema’s history most memorable movies and iconic characters that occupy an important place on Pop Culture.
