Remembering the “Superman” Christopher Reeve on His 72nd Birthday
The Eternal “Superman” Christopher Reeve was born Christopher D’Olier Reeve on September 25, 1952, in New York City, U.S, he started to act at a young age, and by 1968, as a teenager, he already had done several student plays. After spending most of 1970’s studying theater and being a stage actor, Reeve’s big break came in 1977 when he got the role of the big budget production “Superman.” Reeves based his portrayal of Clark Kent on Cary Grant in his role in “Bringing Up Baby,” as a talented all-around athlete. Portraying the role of Superman would be a stretch for the young actor, but he was tall enough for the role and had the necessary blue eyes and handsome features, however, his physique was slim. He refused to wear fake muscles under the suit and instead went through an intense two-month training regimen supervised by former British weightlifting champion David Prowse, who played Darth Vader in the suit in the original “Star Wars” films. “Superman” premiered in 1978 becoming a worldwide blockbuster and brought a sudden fame and success to Reeve. He would reprise the superhero role three more times on the sequels from 1981, 1983 and 1987. Reeve appeared in other critically acclaimed films such as “Somewhere in Time” in 1980, “The Bostonians” 1984, “Street Smart” 1987 and “The Remains of the Day”1993. The Superman role it’s still the one most people associate his name with till this day. Sadly, his career was interrupted when in 1995, Reeve became a quadriplegic after being thrown from a horse during an equestrian competition He was confined to a wheelchair and required a portable ventilator for the rest of his life. Christopher Reeve passed away on October 10th, 2004, in New York aged only 52. Over the years several actors have played “The Man of Steel”, but the Superman built by Christopher Reeve still sticks to this day in most people memories as “the real one”, he gave the character a life that goes beyond the screen.
