The Beatles Animated Series Debuts in 1965 on ABC
The 1960’s were prodigal in transforming real Rock and Pop bands into cartoons and on September 25th,1965 the first cartoon series based on a Rock band premiered on ABC: “The Beatles”. The series was shown on Saturday mornings with 39 episodes produced over three seasons and each episode was named after a Beatles song, with stories based on the lyrics. The original run was broadcast between 1965 and 1967, and from 1968 until 1969 on re-runs. The Beatles themselves were not directly involved in the production, which was created by Al Brodax and Sylban Buck; American actor Paul Frees provided the voices for John Lennon and George Harrison, while British actor Lance Percival did the same for Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. Al Brodax, who produced the series, was later the producer and co-writer of the 1968 Beatles animated film “Yellow Submarine.” The film’s director, George Dunning, also worked on the cartoon series. The series was a historical milestone as the first weekly television series to feature animated versions of real, living people, the same formula would be later used for bands such as The Jackson Five and the fictional The Archies.
