Based on Truman Capote’s 1958 novella of the same name, the 1961 Blake Edwards movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” seems now to be a time capsule for a period that has been long gone. But despite that, Holly, the character played by Audrey Hepburn, retains her charm and relevance, as a pop icon, fashion icon and also as a timeless mirrored image of a certain type of person that will always exists. The charming, beautiful and seductive, luxury “doll” Holly, searches for her perfect wealthy husband in the streets of Manhattan, she dresses well, dines well and lies well, making her living as a very expensive escort. The game changes for this material girl when one day she gets a new neighbor on her apartment building, Paul, who aspires to be a successful writer. Paul criticizes her materialistic view of the world, and regards her as an irresponsible young woman, but turns out to be, he’s just living of appearances as much as Holly is. This is the plot, for a movie that in a simple way presents the viewer with several twists. The romantic ambiance, the cosmopolitan 60’s New York background, turned “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” one of the most iconic movies ever, featuring one of the most iconic movie scores of all time, which features the perfectly put together “Moon River” by Henry Mancini, who was awarded two Oscars, both for Best Score and Best Original Song. With her hair in a high chignon and carrying an oversized cigarette holder, Holly Golightly, a character that earned Audrey Hepburn a nomination for Best Actress at the Academy Awards, lives forever in our collective memory. A lost young woman or a material girl? It’s up for the viewer to decide. “Breakfast At Tiffany’s” was released on Paramount Pictures October 5, 1961.
