Actor and comedy legend Chevy Chase turns 81
With the film series of “National Lampoon’s Vacation” Chevy Chase became one of the most popular comedy actors in the world during the 1980’s, but prior to that, Chase, who was born in New York City, New York on October 8, 1943, already had almost two decades of a career in comedy that started professionally in 1967 as a member of an early underground comedy ensemble called Channel One which he co-founded, and credits such as a one-page spoof on Mission: Impossible for Mad magazine in 1970. Chevy Chase first became a familiar face on the TV screens when he was cast as one of the original members of Saturday Night Live in 1975, the popular NBC’s late-night comedy television show where during the first season, he introduced every show except two, with the now famous line “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!”

After leaving the show, Chase had his first leading film role in the comedy “Foul Play” (1978), that earned him two Golden Globe Award nominations. The worldwide success came during the early 1980’s, with his most memorable role as Clark W. Griswold in the popular comedy film series “National Lampoon’s Vacation”, starting in 1983.
Throughout the 1980’s Chase became one of the most popular comedy actors in Hollywood, and, at the height of his career earned around US$7 million per film and was a highly visible celebrity, hosting for two years in a row, 1987 and 1988, the Academy Awards. Other notable and popular films he starred were “Caddyshack” in 1980, “Spies Like Us” in 1985, “Three Amigos” in 1986 and during the 1990’s with “Memoirs of an Invisble Man” in 1992. Chase keeps working actively as an actor, despite not having the same visibility and popularity that he had back in the 1980’s, in 2002 he appeared in “Orange County” and in 2010 “Hot Tube Time Machine”. He also reprise the role of Clark W. Griswold in 2015 in the “National Lampoon’s” spin-off “Vacation”. Chase’s latest movies are”The Last Laugh”, released in 2019 alongside another Hollywood legend, Richard Dreyfuss and “The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee” in 2020 alongside Paul Hogan. He also gave his voice to the animation film “Panda vs. Aliens” released in 2021.
