Matt Damon was born Matthew Paige Damon on October 8, 1970, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Raised in a modest, intellectual household by his mother, a professor, and his father, a stockbroker, Damon developed a passion for acting at a young age. He attended Harvard University but left before graduating to pursue his acting career.
Damon’s early acting work included minor roles in films like Mystic Pizza (1988) and School Ties (1992), but his breakthrough came in 1997 when he co-wrote and starred in Good Will Hunting with his childhood friend, Ben Affleck. The film earned him and Affleck an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, propelling Damon into stardom. His portrayal of the troubled math genius, Will Hunting, also garnered him a Best Actor nomination.
Following his success with Good Will Hunting, Damon became one of Hollywood’s most bankable actors. He starred in critically acclaimed films such as Saving Private Ryan (1998) and The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999). His role in the Jason Bourne series solidified his status as a versatile action star, beginning with The Bourne Identity in 2002 and continuing with several successful sequels.
In addition to action roles, Damon has delivered strong performances in films like The Departed (2006), The Martian (2015), for which he earned another Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, and Ford v Ferrari (2019).
Damon married Argentine-born Luciana Barroso in 2005, whom he met while filming in Miami. They have four daughters together, and Damon is known for keeping his family life private and grounded. Despite his fame, Damon prioritizes spending time with his wife and children, often stating that family comes first.
In 2021, he starred in Stillwater, portraying a father fighting to clear his daughter’s name in a foreign country. He also reunited with Ben Affleck to co-write and star in The Last Duel (2021), a historical drama.
