“Hit The Road Jack” by Ray Charles goes No.1 on Hot 100 in 1961
One of the most famous songs of the 20th century, “Hit the Road Jack” was not originally written for Ray Charles, but it was with his version that it became known. His version (that he sings with Margie Hendrix from The Raelettes) hit No.1 on the Hot 100 on October 9th, 1961, and stayed at the position for two consecutive weeks. Charles was awarded a Grammy for Best Rhythm and Blues Recording. “Hit The Road Jack” was originally written by the rhythm and blues artist Percy Mayfield who first recorded it in 1960, it’s one of the most covered songs in the world and it was one of Ray Charles concert staples along with “What’d I Say” and “I Got a Woman”.
