Bakula remains mostly remembered for his role in the hit series Quantum Leap where he portrayed Dr. Sam Beckett, a physicist who “leaps” through time into other people’s bodies to correct historical mistake

The actor Scott Bakula celebrates 70 today

Widely known for his roles in science fiction and television drama, the American actor Scott Bakula was born on October 9, 1954, in St. Louis, Missouri. Raised in a musical family, Bakula developed a love for performing at an early age, participating in school plays and pursuing theater throughout his youth. He attended the University of Kansas but left to pursue a career in acting, starting his journey on the stage.
Bakula’s career began in musical theater, where he performed on Broadway in the 1983 musical Marilyn: An American Fable. After some success on stage, he moved to Los Angeles to break into television. His big break came in 1989 when he was cast as the lead in the science fiction series Quantum Leap.
In Quantum Leap, Bakula portrayed Dr. Sam Beckett, a physicist who “leaps” through time into other people’s bodies to correct historical mistakes. His charming, heartfelt performance earned him widespread recognition and critical acclaim, along with a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a TV Drama. The show ran for five seasons, from 1989 to 1993, and made Bakula a household name.
After Quantum Leap, Bakula took on a range of television and film roles, including appearances in Murphy Brown, Lord of Illusions (1995), and American Beauty (1999). His next major role came in 2001 when he starred as Captain Jonathan Archer in Star Trek: Enterprise, the prequel series to the original Star Trek. His performance in the series, which ran until 2005, solidified his standing as a science fiction icon.
He also had prominent roles in series such as Men of a Certain Age (2009-2011), Looking (2014-2015), and NCIS: New Orleans (2014-2021), where he played Special Agent Dwayne Pride. His work on NCIS: New Orleans was especially popular, running for seven seasons.
Scott Bakula married Krista Neumann in 1981, with whom he had two children before divorcing in 1995. In 1999, he married actress Chelsea Field, and the couple has two more children. Bakula has often spoken about the challenges of balancing family life with a demanding career and has made it a priority to be present for his children.
