The Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro celebrates 60 today
The celebrated filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, known for his love of dark fantasy and monster-filled stories, was born on October 9, 1964, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Del Toro grew up with a deep interest in the macabre, developing a fascination with monsters and horror films from an early age. This childhood passion later became the driving force behind his unique cinematic style.
Del Toro began his career in the film industry working as a special effects makeup artist, which helped him develop a strong visual style that blends the fantastical with the grotesque. His first major directorial debut was the 1993 Mexican horror film Cronos, which earned international acclaim and showcased his talent for blending horror, fantasy, and heartfelt storytelling.
Del Toro’s Hollywood breakthrough came with Blade II (2002) and the dark superhero film Hellboy (2004). Both films solidified his reputation for creating visually stunning, genre-blending movies that embrace mythical and supernatural elements.
Del Toro’s critical and commercial success continued with the 2006 fantasy epic Pan’s Labyrinth. Set against the backdrop of post-Civil War Spain, the film masterfully intertwined dark fairy-tale elements with political themes and became a global sensation. It won three Academy Awards and is widely regarded as one of the greatest films of its genre.
His love for storytelling extended into a variety of genres. He directed the science fiction film Pacific Rim (2013), which became a massive hit, and Crimson Peak (2015), a gothic romance. However, it was with The Shape of Water (2017) that del Toro earned the highest honor in his career. The film, a romantic fantasy about a mute woman who falls in love with an amphibious creature, won four Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Picture.
Guillermo del Toro married Lorenza Newton in 1986, with whom he had two daughters, but they later divorced. Despite his dark and eerie films, del Toro has often described himself as a family man with a love for literature, mythology, and art. He has spoken publicly about his atheism and his fascination with spiritual themes, which frequently surface in his films.
In 2021, he directed Nightmare Alley, a psychological thriller starring Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett. He also ventured into animation with Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022), which was widely praised for its unique stop-motion approach and emotional depth, winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
