Written and produced by Madonna and Steve Bray, “True Blue,” the title track from Madonna’s third studio album “True Blue,” was first released as a single on September 17, 1986. The song lyrics were inspired by Madonna’s feelings for her then husband, actor Sean Penn, and it’s a tribute to him by using one of his favorite expressions (true blue). “True Blue” steps away from Madonna’s signature dance style, and it’s deeply inspired by the Motown’s Doo-Wop girl groups from the early 1960’s, which are considered the direct antecedents of Madonna’s musical sound, and the music she had grown up in her hometown Detroit. Featured in an album that included some of her biggest hits, “True Blue” debuted on the U.K singles charts in October 1986 and by October 11th was the No,1 song becoming Madonna’s third number one single in the U.K. Overall, it did well in several countries around the world, it peaked also to No.1 on the main European charts, and in the U.S became another consecutive top ten song for the singer by reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100. The popular and iconic music video for the song was directed by James Foley, who worked with Madonna in her videos for “Live to Tell” and “Papa Don’t Preach,” and portrayed her again with a new look, leaner and sporting platinum blond bushy hair, reminiscent of the 1950’s style. Despite the success of the song, “True Blue” was only performed by Madonna live in two tours, “Who’s That Girl World Tour” in 1987, and almost 30 years later on the “Rebel Heart Tour” between 2015 and 2016.
