“The Red Rocker” Sammy Hagar turns 77 today
He is one of Rock’s most celebrated singers, Samuel Roy Hagar was born on October 13th, 1947, in Salinas, California. Hagar came to prominence in the 1970’s with the hard rock band Montrose. Afterwards launched a successful solo career, scoring an enduring hit in 1984 with “I Can’t Drive 55.” Another hit for Hagar during the 1980’s was the song “Winner Takes It All” from the movie “Over the Top,” though not a best seller in the U.S, the song still introduced Hagar to new generations through the movie score. Reportedly, the first concert Kurt Cobain ever attended in his early teens was of Sammy Hagar. One of the highlights of Hagar’s career was when he replaced David Lee Roth as the lead singer of Van Halen in 1985 but left the band in 1996. During that period, he enjoyed a huge commercial success, the band made some of their best songs including “Why Can’t This Be Love” in 1986 He returned to the band for a 2-year reunion from 2003 to 2005. Hagar was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007 as a member of Van Halen. Aside of music, Sammy is also a businessman, he founded the Cabo Wabo Tequila brand and restaurant chain, as well as Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum. His current musical projects include being the lead singer of Chickenfoot and The Circle.
