Just like 1967, the year of 1968 was prodigal in producing several acclaimed Rock and Pop albums that have become since indisputable classics, influencing several generations of musicians in every music field. Though by 1968 Psychedelic Rock was starting to slowly fade away as a music trend, after being well exploited throughout 1967, there were still a handful of several Psychedelic Rock classics released that remain pivotal for the genre, but it was noticeable that other Rock and Pop subgenres also were starting to emerge. Some bands were going heavier, some bands were going milder, and some bands were exploring and paving the way for new fields. Among some of these were the Blue Cheer debut album “Vincebus Eruptum,” a fusion of Psychedelic Rock with a heavy dosage of distorted bass, guitars and heavy pounding drums, this album, was pivotal on the development of Heavy Metal, Grunge and Stoner Rock.
Also, the Silver Apples, with their self-titled debut, became the righteous godfathers of modern electronic music. This album sounds so fresh today that is hard to believe that it was released 50 years ago, it’s notorious the impact it had on bands such as The Prodigy or The Chemical Brothers. Other bands such as The Doors, started to abandon the Psychedelic flavored Rock of their first two albums and went into a new music direction with “Waiting for the Sun,” but never dropping their signature sound. The established Rolling Stones officially shut down their 1967 experimental period with “Beggars Banquet” returning to a more bluesy and harder Rock sound, and The Beatles released yet another masterpiece, the usually called “White Album” the double LP extravaganza where the band explored new sounds, and gave each member creativity freedom to put their signature on each song, in an album that became a milestone and landmark on Pop Culture. Pop bands such as The Mamas & The Papas said farewell with a compilation that also featured new songs, Simon and Garfunkel put some beat in their Folk with “Bookends” and Iron Butterfly Heavy Psychedelic Rock influenced a whole 1970’s generation of Heavy Metal bands. The Jimi Hendrix Experience double “Electric Ladyland,” Hendrix’s own “Magnum Opus” became the band’s last official studio album and offered listeners a journey that was put together obsessively by Hendrix. 1968 was a golden year for the record industry, the Mono format became obsolete, Stereo technology opened the doors for artists to explore more and go further. Many new bands begun their journey, and others, called it quit at the height of their popularity and success.
