Culture Club’s “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” goes No.1 in 1982
Culture Club were a Pop phenomenon during the early 1980’s. Lead by the charismatic and eccentric Boy George, the band had a string of worldwide hit songs starting in 1982 with “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me.” On October 23rd, 1982, Culture Club reached No.1 on the U.K singles charts, the band went on to have other 11 Top 40 hits in the U.K alone, but “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me,” a new wave/reggae/pop blend written by the band, launched Culture Club’s career internationally, consecutively making Boy George one of the 1980’s absolute Pop icons, cultivating an image that remains on Pop culture imagery to this day. The song entered the American Pop chart the week ending December 4, 1982. It hit #1 in Cash Box magazine and held at #2 for three weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in March and April 1983 only kept from the #1 spot by “King of Pop” Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.” Between 1982 and 1984 the band scored amazing Pop hits such as “Karma Chameleon,” “Time,” “Church of the Poison Mind,” “It’s A Miracle” and “The War Song.”
