Growing up in a creative family, Roberts initially aspired to become a veterinarian but was drawn to acting like her older brother, actor Eric Roberts. She moved to New York after high school, where she pursued acting and landed her first roles in the mid-1980s.
Roberts made her film debut in Satisfaction (1988), followed by a breakout role in Mystic Pizza (1988), where her performance as the lively Daisy earned critical praise. In 1989, she starred in Steel Magnolias and won her first Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
