Enya’s “Orinoco Flow” peaks to No.1 in 1988
Rare are the occasions where mainstream Pop meets and blends with New Age/World Music, but Enya did achieve to break that niche wall into the mainstream Pop, when in 1988 her single “Orinoco Flow” reached the top of the charts worldwide. On October 29th, 1988, it peaked to No.1 on the UK charts, the song became so popular that even made it to No.24 on the U.S Hot 100 in 1989. The Irish singer-songwriter co-wrote the song with Roma Ryan, it was released on October 15th, 1988, and included on her best-selling album “Watermark” that also featured other hits for Enya such as “Storms in Africa” and “Exile.” “Orinoco Flow” started Enya’s big popularity during the late 1980’s and 1990’s, in 1991 she scored again a big hit with “Caribbean Blue,” making her probably the most Pop of all New Age artists. “Orinoco Flow” received two Grammy Award nominations for Best Music Video and Best New Age Performance at the 32nd Annual Grammy Awards.
