In 1990 Vanilla Ice becomes the first Rap artist to reach No.1 on the Hot 100
In 1990 Rap and Hip Hop were different in shape and form of what we know today, despite having had already some white artists during the 1980’s making Rap music (such as the Beastie Boys or members of the Fatboys) on November 3rd 1990 Vanilla Ice did the impossible back then, which was to bring Rap and Hip Hop to the mainstream, by releasing the blend of bubblegum pop with Rap “Ice Ice Baby”. The single became the first ever Rap song to reach No.1 on the mainstream singles charts and also a worldwide hit. “Ice Ice Baby” featured a sample of Queen and David Bowie’s 1982 Hit “Under Pressure” recognizable bassline but not credited, though Vanilla Ice claimed that the bassline he used was different from “Under Pressure” he was forced later to admit that it was indeed sampled from the Queen and David Bowie song. After scoring some other minor hits in the early 1990’s, Vanilla Ice fell into obscurity and despite having been the first Rap artist to reach No.1 on the Hot 100 he’s mostly remembered as a one hit wonder.
