The actress Calista Flockhart celebrates 60 today

Calista Kay Flockhart was born on November 11, 1964, in Freeport, Illinois. Raised in a family that moved frequently due to her father’s job, she developed an interest in acting early on, studying theater at Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts. Her commitment to acting led her to New York City, where she built her career from the ground up, performing in off-Broadway productions and working in theater before moving to television and film.
Flockhart’s big break came in 1997 when she landed the lead role in Ally McBeal, a legal dramedy series created by David E. Kelley. Her portrayal of Ally, a quirky and complex attorney navigating the ups and downs of work, relationships, and self-discovery, made her an instant star. The show, which ran until 2002, resonated widely for its humor and unique style, and Flockhart’s performance earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series (Comedy or Musical) in 1998. The role not only brought her fame but also made her an icon of late ‘90s television, known for bringing vulnerability and wit to a memorable character.
Following Ally McBeal, Flockhart took time to focus on select projects, including film roles in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1999) and Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her (2000). In 2006, she returned to television with Brothers & Sisters, portraying Kitty Walker, a political commentator in a tight-knit family drama. The series was well-received and ran for five seasons, reaffirming Flockhart’s versatility and establishing her as a respected figure in drama as well as comedy.
After Brothers & Sisters, she took on a recurring role in the superhero series Supergirl (2015-2021), where she played Cat Grant, a powerful media mogul, a character that became a fan favorite.
In 2002, Flockhart adopted a son, Liam, whom she has raised alongside her husband, actor Harrison Ford. The couple met at the 2002 Golden Globe Awards and married in 2010, forming one of Hollywood’s most admired pairs.
More recently in 2024 she starred in the series “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans,” where she played the role of socialite Lee Radziwill.
