The French actress, director, screenwriter, and author Sophie Marceau was born Sophie Danièle Sylvie Maupu on November 17, 1966, in Paris, France. She grew up in the Paris suburb of Gentilly, raised by her mother, Simone, a shop assistant, and her father, Benoît Maupu, a truck driver.
Marceau’s rise to fame began at the age of 14 when she was cast as Vic Beretton in the 1980 film La Boum (The Party). The film’s success made her a household name in France and led to a sequel, La Boum 2 (1982), for which she received the César Award for Most Promising Actress.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Marceau expanded her repertoire with roles in films such as Fort Saganne (1984), L’Étudiante (1988), and Fanfan (1993). Her international breakthrough came with her portrayal of Princess Isabelle in Mel Gibson’s Braveheart (1995). She further gained global recognition as Elektra King in the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough (1999).
In addition to acting, Marceau ventured into directing with her debut film Parlez-moi d’amour (Speak to Me of Love) in 2002, which earned her the Best Director Award at the Montreal World Film Festival.
Marceau has also appeared on more than 300 magazine covers worldwide and been the face of numerous luxury brands. Sophie Marceau has a son with Polish director Andrzej Żuławski, and a daughter with the American producer Jim Lemley.
