Jodie Foster is one of the most acclaimed and awarded actresses of all time in film history, and it can be said her whole life has been spent acting. She was born on November 19, 1962, in Los Angeles, California and at age three she began her professional career, first as a child model and shortly after in 1968 made her acting debut in the sitcom “Mayberry R.F.D.” During that period, between the late 1960’s and early 1970’s she gained popularity as a child actress, starring in movies such as Disney’s “Napoleon and Samantha” in 1972 and the music “Tom Sawyer” in 1973. Director Martin Scorsese noticed Foster’s potential as an actress and in 1974 she earns her first big role in the Scorsese movie “Alice Doesn’t Lives Here Anymore,” but it was in 1976 that Foster got her breakthrough role, in Scorsese’s acclaimed psychological thriller “Taxi Driver,” in which she played a child prostitute. The role earned Foster at age 14, a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Despite her huge success during the 1970’s, as the 1980’s arrived, the actress had to struggle in order to transition into adult roles and in 1988 she gained critical acclaim for playing a rape survivor in the legal drama “The Accused,” for which she won her first Academy Award for Best Actress. Three years later, in 1991, she won her second Academy Award for the acclaimed psychological horror movie “The Silence of the Lambs,” in which she portrayed the iconic FBI agent Clarice Starling. That same year, she made her debut as a film director with the acclaimed “Little Man Tate.” Now, over four decades since her breakthrough role in “Taxi Driver,” Jodi Foster continues to present us with wonderful movies and characters, such as “Panic Room” (2002), “Flightplan” (2005) and “Inside Man” (2006). Throughout her brilliant career, Jodie Foster has received two Academy Awards, three British Academy Film Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and the Cecil B. DeMille Award. For her work as a director, she has been nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award. Jodie Foster publicly came out as gay in 2007 after several years of rumors. The actress married actress and photographer Alexandra Hedison in 2014, after a 15-year-old relationship with the also actress Cydney Bernard whom she met on the set of the 1993 “Sommersby” and has two children with.
The John W. Hinckley Jr. connection
During the 1980’s, Foster was one of the most stalked actresses, most notably by John W. Hinckley, Jr. while in her freshman year at Yale, 1980-81, Hinckley, who had developed an obsession with Foster after watching “Taxi Driver”, tried to contact her several times during that period, and on March 30, 1981 he attempted to assassinate U.S. President Ronald Reagan, claiming that his motive was to impress Foster. Hinckley has since been released and has a YouTube channel where he sings and plays original songs.
