Meg Ryan turns 63: Here’s five of her must watch movies

The once America’s sweetheart Meg Ryan was born in Fairfield, Connecticut on November 19, 1961, beginning her professional acting career in 1981. She starred in several minor roles until landing in her first important one starring on CBS’s soap opera “As the World Turns” in 1982. Throughout the 1980’s Meg Ryan appeared in many of the decade’s popular movies in minor roles, including the 1986 blockbuster “Top Gun,” and by the end of the decade, in 1989, she scored her first big role in the Rob Reiner-directed romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally…” alongside Billy Crystal with whom she played the famous “restaurant orgasm scene” one of the most iconic in film history, and which brought her widespread attention and her first Golden Globe nomination. Ryan was quickly labeled by Hollywood as a romantic comedies actress, but eager to prove she was more than that she took the role of real-life character Pamela Courson, the girlfriend of The Doors frontman Jim Morrison in the 1991 biopic “The Doors” directed by Oliver Stone. Unlike her previous roles, this was a heavy and dramatic character, in which she had to perform several violent drug use scenes alongside Val Kilmer who played Morrison. The actress became fast one of Hollywood’s biggest assets and scored lead roles in many of the 1990’s international blockbusters, including the 1990 “Joe Versus the Volcano” alongside Tom Hanks which was the first of three blockbusters the pair did together, “Sleepless in Seattle” 1993 and “You’ve Got Mail” 1998 being the other two, and also later in the decade “City of Angels.” In 2015, she made her directorial debut with the movie “Ithaca” where she also acts.
