She’s one of the most influential singers of the last 30 plus- years

Bjork turns 59 today

Bjork was born Björk Guðmundsdóttir on November 21st, 1965, with Reykjavík, Iceland. She released her first album “Bjork” at the age of 12 in 1977. During her teens, after the diffusion of punk rock music in Iceland she formed the all-girl punk band Spit and Snot. A year later, in 1980, she formed a jazz fusion group called Exodus and collaborated in another group called JAM80. She first came to prominence with the Sugarcubes, formed in 1986.The Sugarcubes opened for U2 during the US leg of their Zoo TV Tour in October and November 1992, playing to a grand total of 700,000 people. The band dissolved in 1992, and Bjork followed a solo career that proved to be more successful. Her first adult solo album, Debut, was released in June 1993 to positive reviews; it was named album of the year by NME and eventually went platinum in the United States. In 1994 among many other side projects, she co-wrote the song “Bedtime Story” for Madonna’s 1994 album Bedtime Stories. The 1990’s were a very productive era for Bjork who saw her career rise fast to a worldwide audience despite her experimental and alternative music. Some of her most memorable songs are “It’s Oh So Quiet,” “Army of Me,” and “Hyperballad.” Bjork is regarded as one of the most influential female singers and performers over the last 30 plus-years, her impact is noted not only just in music but also in fashion and visual arts.
