“Heaven Is a Place on Earth” is a song by former Go-Go’s lead singer Belinda Carlisle. The song was written by Rick Nowels and Ellen Shipley and was released as the album’s lead single in September 1987. “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” became Belinda’s signature song despite scoring hits also with “Circle in the Sand” and “I Get Weak.” The song went number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on December 5, 1987, becoming Carlisle’s only chart-topper in the US. A month later it hit number one in the United Kingdom, where it held the top spot of the UK Singles Chart for two weeks. Carlisle’s backup vocalists on the track include songwriters Nowels and Shipley as well as Michelle Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas and songwriter Diane Warren. It also featured Thomas Dolby on keyboards. The song was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
