Europe rules the world with “The Final Countdown” in 1986
Inspired lyrically by David Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” “The Final Countdown” was written by Europe’s lead singer Joey Tempest, it was based on a keyboard riff he made from the early ’80’s. The band had not originally planned to release the song as a single, and some members wanted “Rock the Night” to be the first single, as the song originally was made to just be a concert opener, it’s the first single from the band’s third studio album, also named “The Final Countdown.” The song reached number one in 25 countries, including the United Kingdom on December 6th, 1986. “The Final Countdown” was released in the spring of 1986 and became the most successful song from the band on the American rock charts as well as the band’s most recognizable and popular song. It appeared on Billboard magazine’s Billboard Hot 100 chart, reaching the top 10. Europe had a string of hits after “The Final Countdown” that included “Rock the Night,” “Carrie,” “Superstitious” and “Cherokee” and went on to be the most successful Swedish Hard Rock band worldwide. “The Final Countdown” still remains one of the most memorable and recognizable songs from the 1980’s, though the band never made it again to the top of the charts worldwide, this song alone made it possible for Europe to became part of Rock history and it’s an enduring hit to this day.
