C. Thomas Howell was born Christopher Thomas Howell on December 7, 1966, in the Van Nuys neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. He began his career in the entertainment industry at a young age, influenced by his father, Chris Howell, a stunt coordinator and rodeo performer. This early exposure led Howell to work as a child stunt performer and develop skills as a rodeo star.
Howell’s acting career took off with his role as Tyler in Steven Spielberg’s “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (1982). He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Ponyboy Curtis in Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Outsiders” (1983), a film that has become a classic in the coming-of-age genre. Throughout the 1980s, Howell starred in notable films such as “Red Dawn” (1984), “The Hitcher” (1986), and “Soul Man” (1986).
In the 1990s and 2000s, Howell expanded his repertoire with roles in films like “Gettysburg” (1993) and its prequel “Gods and Generals” (2003), where he portrayed Thomas Chamberlain. He also appeared in television series, including “Southland” and “Criminal Minds.”
In 2023, he starred in the contemporary western film “Ride,” playing John Hawkins, a bull rider reconnecting with his estranged son. This role allowed Howell to draw upon his rodeo background, adding authenticity to his performance.
Beyond acting, Howell has ventured into music, performing under the name Tommy Howell. He released the album “American Storyteller” and has been performing acoustic shows, blending his storytelling abilities with musical expression.
Howell married actress Rae Dawn Chong in 1989 after co-starring with her in “Soul Man.” The marriage was short-lived, ending in divorce the following year. In 1992, he married Sylvie Anderson, with whom he has three children. Anderson filed for divorce in 2016.
Today, C. Thomas Howell continues to contribute to the entertainment industry through acting and music.
