With an immense and respected body of work often blends elements of blues, jazz, and vaudeville, creating a unique sound that has garnered critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base, the American singer-songwriter and actor Tom Waits was born Thomas Alan Waits on December 7, 1949, in Pomona, California.
Known for his distinctive gravelly voice and eclectic musical style, Waits began his musical career in the early 1970s, releasing his debut album, “Closing Time,” in 1973. Over the decades, he has produced a diverse discography, including notable albums like “Swordfishtrombones” (1983), “Rain Dogs” (1985), and “Mule Variations” (1999), the latter earning him a Grammy Award.
In addition to his music career, Waits has pursued acting, appearing in films such as “Down by Law” (1986), “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” (2018), and “Licorice Pizza” (2021). His collaborations with director Jim Jarmusch are particularly notable, with their latest project, “Father Mother Sister Brother,” announced in 2024.
Tom Waits married Kathleen Brennan in 1980. The couple has three children and has collaborated extensively, with Brennan co-writing many of his songs. They reside in Sonoma County, California, maintaining a relatively private family life.
Waits recently released a previously unheard version of his song “Get Behind the Mule” to commemorate the 25th anniversary of his album “Mule Variations.”
