Celebrated for his talent in bringing Shakespearean plays to the screen and for his versatile performances in a wide range of genres, the acclaimed actor, screenwriter and director Kenneth Branagh, was born on December 10, 1960, in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Branagh moved to Reading, England, with his family at the age of nine. He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, graduating in 1981 and quickly establishing himself as a skilled stage actor. His career took off with his performances in Shakespearean productions, and he became a founding member of the Renaissance Theatre Company in the late 1980s.

Beyond Shakespeare, Branagh has directed and acted in a variety of projects. Notable films include Dead Again (1991), Thor (2011), and Murder on the Orient Express (2017), in which he starred as Hercule Poirot. His work spans genres, from fantasy and drama to mystery and action. In 2021, Branagh directed Belfast, a semi-autobiographical film about his childhood during the Troubles in Northern Ireland, which received critical acclaim and several Oscar nominations.
Branagh was married to actress Emma Thompson from 1989 to 1995. The couple’s highly publicized marriage ended in divorce, and he later married art director Lindsay Brunnock in 2003. They remain together and live a private life.
His recent projects include reprising the role of Hercule Poirot in A Haunting in Venice (2023) and directing theatrical productions.
