The talented bassist Darryl Jones celebrates 63 today
The renowned American bassist Darryl Jones was born on December 11, 1961, in Chicago, Illinois. Growing up on Chicago’s South Side, he was immersed in a musically rich environment; his father, a drummer, introduced him to drums and xylophone at the age of seven. Inspired by a neighbor’s bass performance, Jones began learning the bass guitar at nine, marking the beginning of his lifelong passion for the instrument.
Jones’s professional career commenced in his early twenties when he collaborated with jazz legend Miles Davis, contributing to the albums Decoy (1984) and You’re Under Arrest (1985). His exceptional talent led to collaborations with prominent artists, including Sting, Herbie Hancock, and Madonna.
In 1993, following Bill Wyman’s departure, Jones joined The Rolling Stones as their bassist. Since then, he has been an integral part of the band, performing on multiple tours and albums. Despite his significant contributions, Jones remains a touring member and has not been officially inducted as a full member of the band.
Beyond his work with The Rolling Stones, Jones has pursued solo projects, including The Darryl Jones Project.
In 2022, his career and life were chronicled in the documentary Darryl Jones: In the Blood, offering an in-depth look at his journey and experiences in the music industry.
Currently, Jones continues to perform with The Rolling Stones and engaging in various musical endeavors.
