George Michael’s “Faith” goes No.1 on the Hot 100 in 1987
In 1987, one year after the end of the successful Pop duo Wham! George Michael released his debut solo album “Faith,” a drastic departure from the bubblegum Pop music he wrote while on Wham! The stunning album it’s often considered George Michael’s masterpiece and included several hit singles of some of his most memorable and popular songs. On December 12th, 1987, the song “Faith”, gave George Michael his third No.1 single in the U.S Hot 100 as a solo artist, preceded by “Careless Whisper” in 1984 and earlier in 1987 with “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)” a duet with Aretha Franklin included on her album “Aretha.” “Faith” was entirely composed by George Michael, and it’s inspired on the 1950’s Rockabilly and Rock N’ Roll sound, incorporating the famous Bo Diddley beat, it was a massive success worldwide. Michael included a reference to his former band on the song intro, when Wham’s “Freedom” it’s played on a church organ, In the famous music video, another one of his songs also can be heard at the very beginning on a Jukebox, the controversial “I Want Your Sex” (No.2 on the Hot 100) that cuts out just when the word “sex” it’s about to be mentioned. With the album “Faith” George Michael also achieved three more No.1 singles in the Hot 100, “Hard Day,” “Father Figure” and “One More Try.”
