The versatile and talented actor Steve Buscemi celebrates 67
With a career spanning decade, Steve Buscemi, known for his distinctive looks, quirky roles in both independent films and mainstream hits, and incredible range as an actor, was born on December 13, 1957, in Brooklyn, New York, USA.
Before entering the world of acting, Buscemi worked as a firefighter for the New York City Fire Department in the early 1980s. His transition into acting began with roles in small independent films. His breakthrough came in the 1990s with memorable performances in films like Reservoir Dogs (1992), directed by Quentin Tarantino, and Fargo (1996), by the Coen Brothers. Buscemi became a go-to actor for offbeat, complex characters, often playing roles that highlighted his unique charm and wit.
He has collaborated frequently with the Coen Brothers, appearing in films such as The Big Lebowski (1998) and Barton Fink (1991). Buscemi’s ability to balance dark humor and emotional depth has made him a standout performer in Hollywood. Beyond acting, he has also directed films, including Trees Lounge (1996), a critically acclaimed indie drama that he also wrote.
On television, Buscemi achieved widespread acclaim for his role as Enoch “Nucky” Thompson in the HBO series Boardwalk Empire (2010–2014), earning him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series. His work on the show showcased his ability to lead a complex, character-driven narrative.
Buscemi married artist Jo Andres in 1987. The couple had one son, Lucian. Sadly, Andres passed away in 2019, and Buscemi has often spoken lovingly about their decades-long relationship.
In recent years, Buscemi has remained active in both film and television. He has appeared in projects such as the anthology series Miracle Workers (2019–present), where his comedic timing shines. He also continues to voice animated characters, such as his roles in Monsters, Inc. (2001) and the Hotel Transylvania series.
