Two of the biggest Pop music stars of all time were born on this day in 1949, the brothers Maurice and Robin Gibb that together with Barry formed the successful multi-million best sellers Bee Gees. Maurice and Robin were born in Manchester, England but they emigrated to Australia at a young age. Musically talented, the young brothers first came to prominence in 1967 while back in England with their catchy and well crafted, sometimes Beatlesque pop songs. Their first album “Bee Gees 1st” released in 1967, featured also their first big hit “New York Mining Disaster 1941,” it was followed by a string of hit singles, “To Love Somebody,” “Massachusetts,” “Words,” “I’ve Gotta Get a Message to You” and “I Started a Joke” among others. The band soon started also to compose for other artists. They reached a new peak of popularity towards the late 1970’s when they switched musical directions and became Disco music kings with their contributions for the soundtrack album of “Saturday Night Fever” in 1977 that included the Disco classics “Stayin’ Alive,” “Night Fever,” “More Than a Woman” and the ballad “How Deep Is Your Love.” Also, during their period, they released several more hits including “Tragedy” and “Too Much Heaven.” During the early to mid 1980’s the Bee Gees became somehow a nostalgic act from the past, but in 1987 scored a new hit with “You Win Again.” Highly regarded as composers and performers, the Bee Gees remain one of the most popular bands ever. Maurice Gibb passed away unexpectedly at the age of 53 at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Florida, on 12 January 2003, due to complications of a twisted intestine, Robin Gibb passed away in London, England on May 20th, 2012, at the age of 62 from liver and kidney failure. Barry Gibb, the surviving brother (after their younger brother Andy died in the early 1980’s) he’s also the surviving member of the Bee Gees.
