The influential singer and songwriter Pat Benatar was born Patricia Mae Andrzejewski on January 10, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York. Raised in Lindenhurst, Long Island, Benatar displayed a passion for music from an early age. Initially training in classical voice, she later shifted to rock and contemporary styles. After briefly attending Stony Brook University, she married and worked as a bank teller before deciding to pursue her dream of a music career.
In the mid-1970s, Benatar moved to New York City, where her performances at clubs, including the renowned CBGB, caught the attention of record executives. She signed with Chrysalis Records in 1978, marking the beginning of her professional journey.
Benatar’s debut album, “In the Heat of the Night” (1979), featured hits like “Heartbreaker” and established her as a rising star. She quickly followed it with “Crimes of Passion” (1980), which included iconic tracks such as “Hit Me With Your Best Shot.” The album earned her the first of four consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Over the 1980s, Benatar released a string of successful albums, including Precious Time (1981), Get Nervous (1982), and Tropico (1984), producing hits like “Love Is a Battlefield,” “We Belong,” and “Shadows of the Night.” Her blend of rock, pop, and heartfelt lyrics resonated with audiences, solidifying her as a voice of empowerment.
Pat Benatar married her longtime guitarist and collaborator Neil Giraldo in 1982. The couple shares two daughters and remains professionally and personally inseparable. Their partnership is credited with shaping Benatar’s signature sound, with Giraldo serving as her producer and co-writer.
Today, Benatar continues to perform and tour alongside Giraldo, delighting fans with live performances of her classic hits. In 2022, she and Giraldo were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. With over 30 million records sold worldwide and a string of timeless hits, Pat Benatar remains a rock icon.
Beyond music, Benatar has authored an autobiography, Between a Heart and a Rock Place in 2010.
