The musician and filmmaker Rob Zombie celebrates 60 today
The multifaceted artist Rob Zombie, known for his work as a musician, filmmaker, and creator of macabre, horror-inspired art, was born Robert Bartleh Cummings on January 12, 1965, in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Growing up in a creative yet unconventional household, Zombie was drawn to the world of horror, heavy metal, and counterculture from an early age. He attended the Parsons School of Design in New York City before pursuing a career in entertainment.
In the late 1980s, Zombie co-founded White Zombie, a band that blended heavy metal with industrial and horror aesthetics. The group achieved critical and commercial success with albums like “La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Volume One” (1992) and “Astro-Creep: 2000” (1995), featuring hits like “Thunder Kiss ’65” and “More Human Than Human.”
After White Zombie disbanded in 1998, Rob launched a solo career, releasing his debut album, “Hellbilly Deluxe” (1998). The album, including tracks like “Dragula” and “Living Dead Girl,” cemented his status as a solo artist. Subsequent albums like The Sinister Urge (2001) and Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor (2013) continued his success in the heavy metal genre.
Zombie transitioned to filmmaking in the early 2000s, making his directorial debut with “House of 1000 Corpses” (2003). The film, a gritty homage to 1970s horror, gained a cult following and was followed by a sequel, “The Devil’s Rejects” (2005), which garnered critical acclaim.
Zombie has since directed several films, including his reimagining of “Halloween” (2007) and its sequel “Halloween II” (2009). His distinct visual style—marked by grimy aesthetics, surreal imagery, and violent storytelling—has made him a polarizing but influential figure in modern horror.
Rob Zombie has been married to actress Sheri Moon Zombie since 2002. She frequently collaborates with him on his films, taking on prominent roles. The couple resides in California, living a vegan lifestyle and sharing a passion for animal rights and environmental causes.
Zombie’s most recent album, “The Lunar Injection Kool Aid Eclipse Conspiracy” (2021), topped rock charts, and in 2022, Zombie directed a family-friendly horror-comedy adaptation of “The Munsters,” marking a departure from his usual style.
