The actor, race car driver, and philanthropist Patrick Dempsey was born on January 13, 1966, in Lewiston, Maine. Raised in nearby Turner, Maine, Dempsey discovered his talent for performance at a young age. Initially pursuing juggling and amateur magic, he competed in national juggling championships during his teens. He transitioned to acting in his early twenties, appearing in stage productions before landing his first film roles.
Dempsey gained attention in the late 1980s with romantic comedies such as “Can’t Buy Me Love” (1987) and “Loverboy” (1989), which elevated him to “Hollywood Heartthrob.” His career experienced a resurgence in the 2000s as a leading man in Hollywood.
Dempsey’s defining role came in 2005 with “Grey’s Anatomy”, where his portrayal of the charming and skilled neurosurgeon Dr. Derek Shepherd became a cultural phenomenon. His work on the series earned him two Screen Actors Guild Awards and several People’s Choice Awards. After leaving the show in 2015, he expanded his repertoire with roles in films such as “Enchanted” (2007), “Made of Honor” (2008), and “Bridget Jones’s Baby” (2016).
Beyond acting, Dempsey is an avid motorsports enthusiast, participating in professional racing events, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He also owns Dempsey Racing, a motorsports team.
Dempsey married makeup artist Jillian Fink in 1999, and the couple has three children: a daughter, Talula, and twin sons, Sullivan and Darby. They briefly separated in 2015 but reconciled, strengthening their bond. The family splits their time between homes in California and Maine.
In addition to his career, Dempsey is dedicated to philanthropy. He founded the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing in honor of his mother, who passed away from ovarian cancer. The center provides support, education, and wellness services to cancer patients and their families.
Dempsey recently reprised his role as Robert in the Disney sequel “Disenchanted” (2022) and appeared in high-profile television projects, including the critically acclaimed series “Devils” (2020–2022).
