The actress and comedian Julia Louis-Dreyfus celebrates 64 today
The highly acclaimed actress, producer, and comedian Julia Louis-Dreyfus was born on January 13, 1961, in New York City, New York. Louis-Dreyfus is the daughter of Judith, a writer and special needs tutor, and Gérard Louis-Dreyfus, a French-American billionaire and businessman. Raised in Washington, D.C., and later Evanston, Illinois, she attended Northwestern University, where she studied theatre before leaving to pursue her acting career.
Louis-Dreyfus first gained prominence as a cast member on “Saturday Night Live” (1982–1985), showcasing her comedic chops. However, her career-defining role came as Elaine Benes on the iconic sitcom “Seinfeld” (1989–1998). Her portrayal of the quirky, self-assured, and hilariously flawed Elaine earned her widespread acclaim and a Primetime Emmy Award.
After “Seinfeld,” Louis-Dreyfus continued her successful television career, starring in “The New Adventures of Old Christine” (2006–2010), which earned her a second Emmy. She reached even greater heights with her role as Selina Meyer in the political satire “Veep” (2012–2019). Her performance as the ambitious and hilariously self-absorbed politician garnered a record-breaking six consecutive Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
Louis-Dreyfus married comedian and writer Brad Hall, whom she met while both were at Northwestern University, in 1987. The couple has two sons, Henry and Charles. She has spoken openly about her battle with breast cancer, diagnosed in 2017, and used her platform to raise awareness for health and wellness.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus continues to act and produce, with recent appearances in projects like Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (2022) and the Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” (2021), where she plays Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. She is also set to star in upcoming films and television series.
With multiple awards, including nine Emmys, a Golden Globe, and several Screen Actors Guild Awards, Julia Louis-Dreyfus remains one of the most decorated performers in television history.
