Remembering the Folk legend Richie Havens
The American folk singer and songwriter Richie Havens was born Richard Pierce Haven on January 21, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York. Raised in the vibrant neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Havens grew up surrounded by the rich cultural influences of gospel, jazz, and blues. This diverse upbringing shaped his distinctive sound, blending folk, soul, and rhythm-and-blues.
Havens began his career in the Greenwich Village folk scene during the early 1960s. Known for his deep, gravelly voice and intense guitar strumming, he quickly gained a reputation as a powerful performer. His breakthrough came with his iconic opening performance at Woodstock in 1969, where his improvised song “Freedom” became an anthem of the era.
Havens released over 25 albums throughout his career, including notable works like “Mixed Bag” (1966), which featured tracks such as “Handsome Johnny” and his soulful rendition of “Just Like a Woman” by Bob Dylan. His covers of popular songs, such as The Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun”, earned him widespread acclaim for their originality and emotional depth.
Richie Havens was passionate about education and environmental causes, founding organizations like the Northwind Undersea Institute, an oceanographic children’s museum. He was also deeply involved in charity work and advocated for social and environmental justice.
After decades of touring and recording, Havens retired from live performances in 2010 due to health issues. On April 22, 2013, Richie Havens passed away at the age of 72 at his home in Jersey City, New Jersey, due to a heart attack.
Today, Richie Havens is remembered as one of the most compelling voices of his generation. His soulful interpretations of songs and his role in the Woodstock Festival immortalized him as a symbol of peace and social change.
