Remembering the influential singer and songwriter Warren Zevon

A Brief Overlook on Warren Zevon’s life and career

Known for his dry wit and acerbic lyrics, the singer and songwriter Warren Zevon was born 78 years ago today in Chicago, Illinois, January 24, 1947. Zevon began his music career in the late 1960s, writing songs and working as a session musician. He gained recognition for his 1976 self-titled album, which included songs like “Hasten Down the Wind”, later covered by Linda Ronstadt. However, it was his 1978 album “Excitable Boy” that cemented his legacy, featuring iconic tracks such as “Werewolves of London,” “Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner,” and “Lawyers, Guns and Money.”
Known for blending satire and social commentary, Zevon earned critical acclaim throughout his career. His songwriting often tackled themes of mortality, politics, and the absurdities of life, delivered with his signature dark humor. He collaborated with a variety of artists, including Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen, and members of Fleetwood Mac. During the late 1970’s and 1980’s he became one of the main influences of a new Indie artists generation including R.E.M. Among the songs featured in his 15 solo albums, are the hits “Werewolves of London”, “Lawyers, Guns and Money” and “Carmelita.” Zevon was married to Crystal Zevon, with whom he had a daughter, Ariel. He also had a son, Jordan, from a later relationship. Despite his musical success, Zevon struggled with alcoholism, a battle he openly addressed in his music and interviews. He achieved sobriety later in life and used his experiences as inspiration for his work.
In 2002, Zevon was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive form of lung cancer. Despite his illness, he recorded his final album, “The Wind,” which included the Grammy-winning song “Keep Me in Your Heart.” Zevon passed away on September 7, 2003, at the age of 56, leaving behind a rich legacy of music that continues to inspire fans and musicians.
